From managing 250+ steel plant assets to building products for millions of users. That's the leap.
Ashutosh Kumar just joined Ceipal as Director of Product Management, and his career path is a masterclass in translating deep operational knowledge into product thinking.
Seven years at Steel Authority of India Limited. Not behind a desk. In the middle of planning, maintenance innovation, procurement, and crisis management across massive industrial operations. Leading a seven-person team. Making sure 250+ assets kept running. That's where he learned what real complexity looks like.
Most product managers come from tech backgrounds and learn operations on the job. Ashutosh did it backwards. He understood stakeholder management, cross-functional coordination, and high-stakes decision-making before he ever touched a SaaS roadmap.
Then came Indian Institute of Management Bangalore's one-year MBA in 2022. The inflection point. He took everything he learned in steel operations and applied it to product strategy. Persistent Systems gave him his first product role, building scalable SaaS solutions. Avalara let him drive the EMEA VAT portfolio, turning complex compliance needs into intuitive products that global enterprises actually want to use.
Now at Ceipal, he's scaling talent technology solutions. HR tech. Compliance platforms. Product ecosystems that need someone who understands both the technical build and the operational reality of how these systems get used in high-pressure environments.
Steel plant planning taught him to think in systems. SaaS taught him to think in user journeys. The combination is rare.
He's also mentoring aspiring product managers and invested in Huemn.ai, an AI portfolio tool for creatives. The operational guy who became the product guy who's now helping build the next wave of tech talent.
At Boardroom CXO, we're seeing more companies hire product leaders with deep operational backgrounds over pure tech PMing experience. When products need to solve real-world complexity, domain expertise becomes the differentiator.
We run an invite-only CXO community with weekly networking and peer learning sessions where leaders discuss career pivots, domain translation, and what it takes to scale products that actually work in complex environments. Interested? DM us.
For product leaders who've transitioned from non-tech backgrounds: what operational experience translated best into product management?
